Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations show the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the case" and have requested to the public for tips.
A senior political figure commented the incident made him speechless and needed to be solved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
