Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
