No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
