RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
